Banan Temple Cambodia
Banan Temple is located in Banan village, Kanteu2 commune, Banan district, Battambang province, along the Sangkea River distancing 22km from the provincial town of Battambang. Banan temple is a mount temple on the top of natural mountain with the 82m in height in point of 12057 ‘03’ N and 10300 “23” E (according to Google Earth), surrounded by fort.
There is a main castle facing to the 4 directions and consisting of the 4 gateways and 4 corner temples. The main castle in the middle built of sandstone; while fort, gateways and corner temples were built of laterite with sandstone – built decorated styles. While the sandstone, taken to build the temple, had been also taken from other many separate places, this is based on the quality of stones to be presently seen. If generally inspected, the Banan temple consists of stairs up and down from the 3 temple bases are at the North side, the South side and the East side; but at the East side, there is a stairs from the ground base of mountain up to the temple castle. According to the carvings that skilled officials saw on the castle of temple and around the campus of Banan temple, this temple consists of mix styles since the 9th century until 13th century of CEC, but style in the 13th century of CEC was in Bayon style in the reign of King JavaramanVII (1181 – 1218 of CEC). We discovered a stone inscription K202 carved in 1050 of CEC – in early reign of King Utayatityavarman II (1050 -1066 of CEC), crowned after his father, named King Soryavarman I (1002 – 1050 of CEC). There is another stone inscription, to be carved in 1830 of BC in 1287 of CEC was the late of 13th century, indicated that the King Chesda Rea Mea Sor, a son of King Sok Nan took this place as Dharma practicing place as pagoda in order to enhance a better Buddhism. The Banan temple, at present, remains a main middle castle, the 4 direction gateways, a small part of the East side, and some remaining of corner temple of Northwest. Due to aging, natural and human factors, the Banan temple receive damages, especially in the war time. The people remain continued believing in God of Banan temple by they celebrated other praying ceremonies for happiness, rain in order to gain much yields annually and to get rid of diseases. On the top of this, the public from near and far came to take relax and pray for happiness based on their wishes.
